Hi, I have a pair of glasses with a high minus prescription of around -9.00 in a large eye size (58-35) that I am trying to lessen the appearance of the thickness of the lenses. Without reducing the lens size which the customer prefers, are there any strategies to help conceal or improve the appearance of the side profile lens thickness? I am wondering about strategies not involving polishing the lenses, such as dyeing the lenses a similar color as the frame color or adding/gluing crystals to the side of the lenses, kind of "unique" methods. My optical supplier actually has a large selection of replacement crystals available and I was wondering if anyone had experience or thoughts on adding/gluing crystals to the side of thick lenses to improve the appearance of them by making them more "stylish"? or is this a crazy idea with pitfalls. Thanks.
Methods to conceal high prescription lense thickness.

Refractive Surgery - Very disturbing information
How can refractive surgery be a potential public health problem if patients are happy with the results?
Health government agency's are doing nothing to change refractive surgery sad situation, maybe it's time to contact the Road Safety Agency's. If this agency's do nothing after warned about the problems, they may be responsible for many deaths in the road.
The article is from 1994. The same is happening today with lasik, lasek, prk, icl, relex smile.. The new FDA LASIK Quality of Life Collaboration Project show enormous incidence of halos, glare, starburst.... It's is a major public health problem!
http://ift.tt/1M4oROt
Excerpted from American Journal of Ophthalmology journal,"Keratorefractive Surgery, Success and the Public Health", March 1994, P. 394 by Dr. Leo Maguire, Mayo Clinic.
"A keratorefractive (Radial Keratotomy, RK) patient may simultaneously be happy with the result of surgey and have degraded vision - How can refractive surgey be a potential public health problem if patients are happy with the results? Inherent in this question is the assumption that a patient without complaint is a patient without optical degradation. That argument does not hold up to closer scrutiny. The keratoreractive literature contains disturbing examples of patients who have visual handicaps that place themselves and others at significant risk for nighttime driving accidents and yet that are happy with the results.
A recent study of patient satisfaction after radial keratotmy consisted of 100 former contact lens patients who underwent radial keratotomy. Comlaints after radial keratomy were rarely mentioned spontaneously, but when elicited, the study found a high complaint rate. Of the patients 10% complained of glare, 7% of "suboptimal visual acuity," 5% of astigmatic blur and headache, 3% near-vision problems and 2% photophobia. Fifty percent complained of "impaired night vision." Half of that group needed spectaces for night driving. Six percent decided against operation in the fellow eye. Despite these findings, 93% of the patients perferred radial keratotomy to contact lenses."
"We are led to the conclusion that patients will tolerate degraded optical quality (including functionally significant aberrations in night vision) for improved uncorrected vision. They are happy now but how safe are they on our highways at night? How safe will they be when cataract-induced aberration compounds the glare and aberration effects of the cornea; and when early macular disease begins to reduce compensatory mechanisms in the retina?
We need answers to these questions because in 30 years one in four drivers on the road will be older than 65 years."

FDA LASIK Quality of Life Collaboration Project
"Based on our initial analyses of our studies:
Up to 45 percent of participants, who had no visual symptoms before surgery, reported at least one visual symptom at three months after surgery.
Participants who developed new visual symptoms after surgery, most often developed halos. Up to 35 percent of participants with no halos before LASIK had halos three months following surgery.
Up to 30 percent of participants with no symptoms of dry eyes before LASIK, reported dry eye symptoms at three months after their surgery. This is consistent with previous studies.)"
http://ift.tt/1SqaAbD
FDA releases LASIK patient survey, warns of large numbers of dissatisfied patients
" These include haloes at up to 35 per cent, followed by starbursts at up to 28 per cent, glare up to 16 per cent, and ghosting up to 6 per cent.""

sports glasses
I have a six year old boy patient who has a high rx : +6.00+2.00x097 .
He is very rough on his glasses, so his parents purchase rec specs for him every year to use for rough play. This year he needed to go into a Slam XL 55 eye . His PD is 57.5 and he has a large head.
My lab called yesterday and said they can't make the lenses because his prescription requires an 8 base, and the Liberty frame requires a 6 base. So I asked them to try a different material type. I was told by their customer service "it's illegal to use anything other than polycarbonate in sports glasses due to OSHA". I than called Liberty, who said they can make his lenses in polycarbonate no problem. I than called my lab back and asked why they can't make the lenses if Liberty can. I also asked about using a different material again, as I have a pediatric specialist who works here, and some of my kids have +10.00 and up prescriptions. I was told OSHA requires polycarbonate in sports glasses and that the safety lab "drop balls" the lenses. I than laughed out loud and said "what?". My lab person said yes, they drop ball the polycarbonate sports lenses. I than called Liberty back and asked if they drop ball the sports lenses and their rep laughed and said no.
Today I looked up the ansi standards for specific sports safety requirements and it lists polycarbonate as a "should" vs a "must".
I know this seems pointless, but I prefer working with my lab vs Liberty lab. I would like if they could do the safety glasses, yet they can't for this patient, not in polycarbonate. I don't understand why Trivex wouldn't be an option? Or even high index 1.67.
Ok, I'm ready to be told why I'm wrong.

VSP,,how are you making any money??
We have been taking VSP for about 3 years.. We have been looking at some of our reimbursements and on a pair of SV glasses we are only getting a payback of 90$,, and then we have the frame fee that we paid,, so sometimes we are only netting 30$$$ WTH.. on progressives we make more,, but we are losing our shirts on SV jobs.. Am I missing something here? Do I need to really up the price of the frames??

According to a study, half the world will be myopic by 2050
February 25, 2016
Half the world's population will be short-sighted (myopic) by 2050, with up to 1 billion people at a significantly increased risk of blindness if current trends continue. Its a major public health issue that will require global attention on eye care prevention and treatment to prevent people becoming highly myopic in the future.
This rapid increase in the prevalence of myopia globally is one of the findings of a research paper recently published by the Brien Holden Vision Institute. The study highlighted a dramatic rise in the number of vision loss from high myopia that increases the risks of serious eye conditions, many of which may lead to permanent blindness.
The authors of the study from Brien Holden Vision Institute, at the University of New South Wales Australia and Singapore Eye Research Institute say that this increase of myopia globally can be attributed toenvironmental factors, principally lifestyle changes resulting from a combination of decreased time outdoors and increased near work activities. This has important implications for planning comprehensive eye care services.

Need help to calculate prism
I want to add to our in house software a module to calculate prism when the patient see away of the optical center.
One of the uses will be to help suspect diplopia if a bifocal or a progressive is prescribed. In this case I Would be interested in vertcal prism.
Correct me if I am wrong.
How to do it. Calculate the prescriptions power at the vertical axis. (90,270). On each lens.
Multiply this vertical power by the centimeters the patient is seeing away from the optical center. The difference in prism power will be what could cause diplopia.
Questions.
If patient is going to wear progressive or bifocals.
Which prescription is used for calcilatons? Far or near prescription?
How many milimeters the patient see away the optical center on a Flat-top 28 and on a progressive lens?

Help for Slanted vision in intermediate
Dear All,
Please give me some advice. I have a patient with old Rx OD-5.25/-0.75 AXIS 110 OS-5.75/-1.25 AXIS 80 OU ADD 2.25 which is done four years ago with Varilux comfort 1.6 with regular corridor, fitting height 19 mm. Recently he made another pair with the same lenses and same fitting height but with new Rx OD-4.25/-2.00 AXIS 95 OS-5.00/-1.25 AXIS 80 OU ADD 2.50 the VA is clearer but patient see slanted vision at intermediate range especially when he is reading emails on his desktop computer screen - all the sentences he is seeing right side higher than left side. It is the same frame so fitting is not an issue. I advised him to wear one week, hopefully the brain can adapt to the new prescription and fuse the image. However, he came back after a week and the problem is still there. What could be the cause and how should I solve his problem?
Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

shooting lenses for policeman
I have a good customer who is a police officer. He is currently in a Pal. He wants to be able to tip his chin down and focus on the site on his pistol and then tip up for distance. He does not want a double D. someone put him in that and he hated it. All I can come with is to raise the seg hgt of the pal to the point that he would only have to tip slightly into intermediate and then into distance. however this may interfere with his driving. he'll have to constantly tip down to look over intermediate. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance!

3mm safety CR39 Blanks. Do they still exist?
I have a customer who wants many plano drillmounts and I've been told by my main supplier that they are not made anymore. He is very particular about the tints which is why I don't want to use polycarb. Anyone have any idea where to get them?
OR if you've found a polycarb lens that tints wonderfully that would be helpful too. I've tried a half dozen or more that claim to be tentacle and I am still unhappy with the difficulty (impossibility) of getting a nice gray gradient.

ABO testing materials
Hello Everyone,
I'm planning on taking the ABO test for the spectacle exam in November probably and I'm wondering what the best materials to study for this test are? I've found 2 different free study guides online http://ift.tt/22XPskt and http://ift.tt/22XPpFg.
But I'm also willing to pay for one if I need to. I saw tons of study materials on nao.org but that seems pretty pricy to be honest. The one I was mostly looking into was from here http://ift.tt/22XPskw for roughly $269.
Any help that's given to me is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Post Lasik Strong Myopia...leave with a -2.00?
Curious to hear your experience and opinions.
Had a -8.00 undergo Lasik recently. She was torn about whether to correct to 20/20 or leave some nearsightedness. Her MD was understandably waffling so as not to get blamed if she didn't like the final correction.
I told her and my experience is most myopes over a -6.00 who wear glasses instead of contacts for their primary correction miss the habit of seeing up close without glasses and are happier with a -2.00 final power.
FWIW- She made a point of coming back to me saying she would have been terribly disappointed if she had gone for the full correction.
What say you???
MD's and OD's comments especially sought.

Projectors?? Anyone still use them?
I'm going through the warehouse (yet again), and clearing out things I haven't used for more than 2 years. I've got 6-10 chart projectors sitting around. I think they all work. I've probably got a drawer full of charts somewhere as well. Bulbs? Sure. I converted all of my offices over to software based charts, so I know I'll never use these.
If there's an interest in them, we can talk. Otherwise, I'll scrap them for $.07 per pound, and have some cash to spend at VEE.
Let me know ASAP, as once I make my mind up to get rid of something, I don't like it sitting around anymore.

We the opti girls started out about the same time in this industry, where no-one was blogging or even knew what a blog was. We communicated back and forth, put each other on our blog rolls and slogged through the morass of Social Media, fed each other stories. OPT, a new top class publication has article on OPTIBOARD
Article copied from new OPTO magazine
This was one of the first popular methods of asynchronous communication on the internet, and made it easy for groups to get together to discuss all manner of special-interest topics. The optical industry is no different, with the most popular internet forum being OptiBoard.
Started in 1995 by Steve Machol, OptiBoard is a place that is designed for express use by optical professionals. It's not intended for the end-consumer, and they are actively discouraged from posting. That means you're not likely to come across the question of "How do I take my own PD?". This makes it a useful professional tool, as you can use it as a resource to not only connect with other eye care professionals, but also to learn more about things going on in the industry.
With over a half million posts, the board is full of topics that you might not otherwise be able to get an answer on. For example, you can get real reviews from peers about what practice management software they use, their opinions on vision insurance plans, or comments about
the latest progressive lens that's on the market. OptiBoard has over 26,000 registered members, making it a great way to get the opinions from a number of other professionals.
The topics on the board range from discussions on lenses and materials, to job postings and used equipment sales. The great part about it is the ease with which you can search through and look back at older discussions. This makes it different from most modern social media tools, as they tend to only focus on the most cun-ent discussions.
There is also a benefit that you don't have to link your personal pro* file to the discussion at hand. A lot of social media revolves around telling everyone all of your personal details about everything. With a forum-based approach, there's no requirement to link personal information to anything. That can make it a little more approachable than normal social media. It also makes it easier to separate your personal from your professional presence.
The reason that OptiBoard works so well is that it's run by someone with quite a bit of optical experience. Steve Machol, who now runs the site full-time. began his career in 1973 with an optical service chain, eventually moving on to work for SOLA Optical. He has a technical background in anti-reflective coating development, which means he was enough of a geek to start OptiBoard back in 1995, and continue to watch it grow for two decades.
Even though it's been around for so long, OptiBoard is a valuable resource for the optical industry. The amassed knowledge that it has can be a benefit for both those new to the industry, as well as veterans that want to find out what other people think of new products. In the end, that's what you really want out of online professional communities - communication and honest feedback that you can use to enhance your knowledge and give yourself wide view of the optical world.

Base curve in Sunglass RX question....
Hello,
If a customer chooses a 8 base curve sunglass and you want to rx it, what would be the best base curve to specify to the lab? Does it depend on the rx, index?
or do you leave it to the labs discretion?
Would appreciate the feedback.

Short Corridor vs Long Corridor Lenses
Hello,
1) Can someone help me understand the pros and cons of both short corridor and long corridor progressive lenses
2) For someone who uses the computer 7+ hours a day would a short or long corridor benefit them?
3) If the progressive height is 23, would it still be possible to give someone a short corridor lens if so how would this benefit them?
4) Which is a better lens for someone who uses the computer 7+ hours a day Essilor Ovation, Natural or Adaptor?
Would greatly appreciate the feedback

Help for a Deutan
I have a patient that is a moderate/severe Deutan. He is on a limited budget, and on a expanded medicaid plan. He has expressed an interest in the EnChroma lenses, which I know have mixed reviews. Not to mention, they are not able send out samples. get accounts set up, etc in a timely fashion.
I was unsure if there are therapeutic tints we could try, or other options out there that would be worth trying.

Vertical decentration in SV lenses
Do you use actual OC measurements for your SV patients, or do you set the OC to the frame center? Or does it depend on the lens/Rx? I like to use the actual OC in most circumstances, except for higher plus lenses. On occasion I have had problems with patients adapting to yoked vertical prism in aspheric lenses, even though the induced yoked prism is quite low. Anyone else notice this?

Hi, I've been trying this question and just want to check if I'm doing anything wrong (or right) as the case may be!
I get +6.20/-3.41x90?
Lens meter questions!
- A lens meter (lens clock), calibrated for a refractive index of 1.523, is used to
measure the front and back surface powers of a toric spectacle lens. Whenapplied to the front surface of the lens the lens meter gives values of +5.00Dalong 90 degrees and +7.50D along 180 degrees. When applied to thespherical back surface the lens measure gives a value of -3.00D. The centrethickness of the lens is 1cm and the refractive index is 1.700. What is theback vertex power of the spectacle lens? Express your answer in negativesph-cyl form with the powers correct to two decimal places. (11 marks)

Patient Has Something Going On That I Can't Figure Out...
dimanche 20 mars 2016
Patient is 12 months post CVA (Stroke), with development of Lateral Meduallary Syndrome. As a result of a minor hemifacial loss of sensation on L the patient lacked appropriate stimulation to produce trophic factors resulting in a significant central corneal abrasion. After about 3 months the patient saw a complete resolution of the abrasion. However, they are now complaining of a symptom I can't figure out. They say whenever they view a bright light source against a dark background they see a significant, complete halo that surrounds the light source. If its a white light source they say the halo has an obvious primastic (rainbow) element to it. It's only affecting the L eye. The halo doesn't appear except in these high contrast scenarios.
I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm thinking a topographic analysis of the cornea, to see if there is a defect in the healing of the cornea that can't be seen with a normal slit lamp evaluation? That's the best I could come up with. I've never heard of anything quite like this before. I'm hoping someone here has seen something like this before, or knows the optics of it better than I do and where to look next for what is causing this.

We are investigating the possibility of dispensing poly PAL's as part of our VSP IOF program. Currently we only use this program for FSV lenses. Anyone have any tips for how to make this work for us using PAL's? You can send a PM if prefer.

Advanced Opticians Tutorial (AOT) (prep for ABO Advanced Exam)
samedi 19 mars 2016
I recently purchased the new version of this book for my offices and offered any ABO certified optician working for me a $2.00 raise for passing this test by studying this one book.
I was VERY encouraged by the response I received to the offer.
Money is often the only reason someone would further their education; Education is the only item that can set your practice apart from the rest of the pack.
Best $100 I've spent all year...

Essilor siding with independent ECPs in the UK ...................
Interview: Mike Kirkley, managing director of Essilor UK
The lens company’s commitment to the independent sector, e-commerce and its marketing strategy were central to the discussion Joe Ayling had with Kirkley at the firm’s Thornbury HQ last week.
Posted by Saul Sebag on 18 March 2016 in Feature,News & Features
Mike Kirkley has been at the helm in Thornbury for the past five years, and as a staunch Newcastle United fan is well versed in expecting the unexpected. As a major supplier to the optical retail market, Kirkley reiterated Essilor’s support for independents rather than larger retail chains. No less than £5m has been invested in another ITV campaign – this year incorporating Transitions – meaning Essilor and its high street partners will be hoping for a tailwind in 2016.

What daily cleaning maintenance do you do on your edgers?
Just bought a used Santinelli 9000. This edger has been very well maintained and I would like to do whatever it takes to keep it that way. I heard that you should spray the inside of the edger after every day with a spray bottle. However, the Santinelli website claims to be careful not to get water into the upper and side seals of the "lens carriage". Could anyone explain what that means? Also, do you use a toothbrush or any other brush to clean the inside? I've heard that one should not touch the wheels with brushes. Do you clean the tracer? Lubricate any parts on an ongoing basis? Any advice is appreciated.
