Full time Optician needed in small private practice, St. Louis MO

Modern state of the art practice looking for an experienced Optician. Certification is not required but preferred. This is a single doctor practice which opened just four years ago. We are growing everyday and have a boutique dispensary with lots of natural light. The position does offer medical benefits after a 90 day probationary period. We are not open Sundays and work minimal Saturday hours. We do not have uniforms so professional business attire is required.
Job duties include selecting frames to be purchased and displayed in the optical, assisting patients with selecting the best frame for their face and prescription, interpreting VSP and Eyemed benefits to accurately price purchases and repairing and adjusting frames.
We are looking for someone that enjoys seeing the same patients year after year and will take the time to get to know them personally to better address their eye wear needs. If you are interested in helping to grow a practice in a fun work environment please email your resume to info@westcountyvision.com. You can also view our office on our website http://ift.tt/1Kob0B8

What material is the Prevencia sample?

I got a Prevencia sample from Essilor but am not sure what the base lens material is. It came in a little black microfiber bag and is 70 mm, and I'm pretty sure it's not poly. It's the lens I'm sending Chris for spectrophotometry so it would be nice to know. I'm hoping that someone else got the same sample and had the wits to ask what the base material is. I'm going to Vision Expo in 2 weeks so maybe someone from Essilor will be there to answer.

Sure wish I had an easy way to measure index of ref.

AMD is a severe problem that is approaching epidemic proportions. 25% of people in the developed world will have vision problems caused by AMD by age 75, (10% of people aged 65-74 and 25% over 75 have severe vision loss) 8a. For people with a family history of macular degeneration, the prevalence of severe vision loss increases to 54% at age 75, and 64% at age 858b. As retinal oxidative stress is a causative factor for the development of AMD, increasing levels of exposure to blue light wavelengths from light therapy lamps can only increase the likelihood of developing AMD.

Over-packaging of Alain Mikli frames

Ever since Oliver Peoples started distributing Alain Mikli frames I have been overwhelmed with their highly unnecessary packaging! These fancy boxes that hold the case and frame are expensive, but no customer wants them. I hate to throw them away, but they are clogging my storage. I usually give unwanted stuff like POP back to the sales rep, but I know my AM rep wouldn't want to be burdened with all these boxes.

Can anyone think of a way to use them in a craft project or something? I hate waste!

Long distance bifocal shooting glasses.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I have a patient who is an Olympic long distance shooter. He shoots targets at 1000 yards through a scope. He wants a shooting specific glass.

He sees great out of his current lenses (a Nikon progressive, not sure what) but when he goes to the bench to shoot, and trys to see his flags to judge wind out of his left eye, he is picking up distortion. His left eye is looking through the upper right corner of his glasses, which we know is not as clear as the center. His head is turned almost 45 degrees and tilted down another 15 degrees.

I have tried a lined poly FT28, still no resolution. The customer wants a reading power in the left lens incase he has to look down and remove a round or fix his rifle.

The only thing I can think of is having him shoulder his rifle, measure the segs, and attempt to cut it with the OC Up and off to the left and put the line almost at a 45 degree angle to match his position. RX is roughly +2.00-1.25 in that eye.

Visioncareprofessiomal.com selling my contact information and not answering my email.

Unfortunately I've emailed the company and asked to be removed from the hundreds of companies they have shared my email, unfortunately I have no results.

I have unsubscribed from each individual email hoping that would work, it did not.

Publicly complaining that I do not want to clean trash from my email everyday or stop working to check for an 'important email' only to find it's only spam from their associated vendors may hopefully result in a resolution.

Im not interested in your vendor offers, I'm not interested in your advertisements, I'm not interested in visioncareprofessional.com I just want a clean email box.

does v.sp actually pay anything for options that are "covered with additional copay?"

jeudi 27 août 2015

Does VS.P actually take any money out of their own pockets towards...ahem..."lens enhancements" that are "covered with additional copay?"

In other words, does vsp "cover" anything for these options or they just forcing discounts and the use of a contracted lab?

Why center grove on + and front/rear on - ?

I was told with the little stand alone groovers to use center on a plus lens and front / rear on a minus lens, can someone explain why it isn't just center all the time? Is it because a center groove would make stuff stick out the front on like a -5? But then wouldn't a rear grove make that even worse?
Why center grove on + and front/rear on - ?

Finding power on some meridians

mercredi 26 août 2015

Hello,
I want to find what power are in every 10 degrees of TABO schema of some lens.
I am using next formula to find powers in meridians: Fsph + Fcyl*sin^2(alpha).
For my purpose there is no need for more precision calculation. But, angle is problem. With this formula I get power in some meridian but no with respect of TABO shema. If some lens have power +0,42 Dsph = -0,84 Dcyl ax 127,05, what is power on 0, 10, 20... degrees but with respect of TABO schema. I am currently reading some article and I want to check numbers on pictures. Here is link:

Thanks in advance

Need a Safety Eyewear Travel Case!

Hello fellow Optiboarders!

We travel to different employers and provide safety eyewear, and I need a new travel case! Much like what vendors use to show off new frames. Big boxy suitcase with wheels, that can hold multiple black velcro frame display trays.

We originally purchased it at VEE 5 years ago, but I don't remember what vendor it was from.

Any ideas where I could find such a thing?

THANKS!!

Coatings and tints Part 1: Manufacture and dispensing factors

I found what I had been looking for a while, and I am going to share it with anyone that has some interest. Dr. Peter Wilkinson asked me a few years ago for any documentation on my Blue Blocker dye because he had been commisioned by a major optical manufacturer to do some research on it in combination with AR coatings.
So I fell on this paper written by him and it could be interest to many OptiBoard Members. This is purely eductional and non commercial.

Coatings and tintsPart 1: Manufacture and dispensing factors
Dr Peter Wilkinson PhD, BSc (Eng), CEng, MIMechE

This two-part article describes the important aspects of coatings and tints.Part 1 gives some history of how they have developed, how they are nowmanufactured, and the main factors to be considered in dispensing. Part 2will describe recent technological developments, what products are nowavailable, and speculate about the future.

Early history, glass lensesand single-layer AR

Before CR39 came into common use, theavailability of tinted lenses was limited bythe manufacturing process and could onlybe produced in two ways. One method wasto incorporate coloured chemicals into theglass when it was melted (this, of course, ishow photochromic glass lenses are stillmade). The other method was to apply thecolour as a vacuum coating, using the sametechniques and equipment as for AR coating. For both methods, the range of colourswas very limited. One innovative alternative, which never came into common commercialuse, was developed by Corning; a thin layerof plastic was adhered to the rear surface ofglass lenses, which could then be tintedusing the same dyes as for CR39.When a dark tint is applied, it is importantthat UV transmittance is restricted (seelater). For glass lenses, creating UV absorptionis not as easy as for plastics and resinlenses, although historically this factor wasnot considered as important as it is today.Photochromic glass does, of course, provideUV absorption naturally because it functionsmainly by absorbing UV light. As high index glass came into commonuse, vacuum coating techniques were developedto reduce the strong surface reflections. As shown in Table 1, these reflectionscan amount to between 8% for low indexmaterials, to almost 20% for very highindex materials. Any Trivex lenses being molded in the USA?

I'm curious as to where molded Trivex lenses (stock single vision, semi-finished flat-tops, others?) are being made, and if none in the USA, why not?

I'd like to explore the fabrication methods being used, so any pointers there would also be helpful.

Also, I've always wondered how they manufacture a front surface mold for a flat top, and even an exec for that matter.

My beautiful daughter

There may still be some members here who remember me as I haven't been available to be an active member for quite some time. I've been spending most of my time helping my daughter, Cari Ann Ford struggle thru late effects from having cancer treatment as a young 12 year old. Last Tuesday she went in for heart valve replacement surgery and we lost her to her battle on Friday at the way too young age of 42.
I hope it ok to share this as I know there are others here that can understand the loss we are trying to cope with.

Poll Reveals Concerns of Contact Lens Consumers

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A national online consumer opinion survey reveals that contact lens wearers say they are concerned about the potential for increased risks not only to their visual health but to the privacy of their personal data that could arise from online purchase of contact lenses, which are regulated medical devices that require a prescription.
The just completed survey found that nearly 75 percent of contact lens consumers feel it is riskier to obtain their contact lenses from online and other sources rather than from their local eye doctor, according to Public Opinion Strategies (POS), one of the nation's leading public opinion research firms.

"Consumers have a lot of options when it comes to ordering contact lenses," said Glen Bolger, of POS. "What our data shows is that consumers are far more confident in family eye doctors when it comes to personal health risks and privacy issues."
The survey found that 89 percent of contact lens consumers said their family eye care doctor provides the most personalized service and cares the most about a patient's eye health. Furthermore, 93 percent of contact lens wearers said that their family eye doctor was the best source of information when it came to caring for contact lenses and preventing related eye health problems.
According to Kevin Lawlor, spokesperson for See Clearly America, "Contact lenses are among the safest forms of vision correction when patients follow the proper care and wearing instructions, as provided by a Doctor of Optometry or other eye doctor. The survey shows consumers say they trust their family eye doctor."
Public Opinion Strategies is one of the nation's leading public opinion research firms, specializing in corporate and public policy research. Since our founding in 1991, we have completed more than 19,000 research projects and interviewed more than eight million Americans across the United States.
About the See Clearly America consumer survey: The See Clearly America survey was created and commissioned in conjunction with Public Opinion Strategies (POS). From August 11 to August 13, 2015, POS conducted 500 online interviews among a representative sample of contact lens wearing Americans ages 18 and older. (Margin of error is plus or minus 4.38 percentage points.)

Less than 10 percent of contact lens consumers say they believe their personal health information is more likely to be properly safeguarded by online and other sources rather than their family eye doctor.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set August 24-28 as "National Contact Lens Health Week," an annual effort to inform and educate the tens of millions of Americans who wear contact lenses. In 2014, a CDC report attributed nearly 1 million emergency room or urgent doctor visits and $175 million in added health care costs to keratitis, an eye infection often linked to improper contact lens use.

E-Sign Marking Unit from Couget, anyone knows whee to get the SIL+ ?

Hello, we have 2 E.Sign units from Couget Optical that we bought in 2003. what they basically do is the "breath mark" on ophthalmic lenses.
They were stored and never used for about 10 years. right know we want to start using them again.
In order for the machines to work the need to use a solution originally sold by Couget called "SIL+". (a silicone solution we assume)
Unfortunately, we´ve been trying to contact any representatives from Couget and it seems the company is not n business anymore (no mail and no web page or response whatsoever via telephone).

Does any one knows where to get this SIL+ solution or something similar?

Thanks
Raul

New ZEISS Academy Vision Care Offers Practical, Engaging Online Education

San Diego, August 24, 2015

ZEISS Vision Care is helping eye care practices achieve their highest potential with the ZEISS Academy Vision Care, a new online campus that helps ECPs develop skills that they can apply immediately in their practices.

The Academy course content, developed through extensive discussions with ECP customers, falls into three critical areas of practice need:

· Optical Science. These courses provide the fundamentals of optics, fitting and dispensing for new staff or as a refresher for experienced ECPs.
· ZEISS Products. These courses cover the latest ZEISS products and technologies with an emphasis on matching products to patient needs and communicating benefits that are most relevant to the patient.
· Selling Skills. These courses help ECPs enhance their patient interactions in order to better meet patient needs and increase premium product sales.

The site uses spoken narrative, animation and “gamification” techniques to create a truly engaging and retainable education experience. Much of the sales training, for instance, occurs in role-plays with virtual customers who respond to questions and statements chosen by the course participant. The site tracks progress and allows students to easily pick up where they left off, and provides personalized certificates for courses completed. The academy is available to ZEISS customers 24/7 at http://ift.tt/1LtjeFs. ECPs can sign-up with their ZEISS Customer Account ID.

“The latest generation of online training has become very engaging, practical and powerful,” said Claude Labeeuw, Vice President-Marketing, ZEISS Vision Care US. “Because the need for this type of education is never-ending, , this investment will benefit our ECP partners tremendously.”

Filters and filtration

A continuation of the discussion elsewhere.

Some basic information...

There are always good reasons for filters in our daily lives. Grey tints and polarized filters to cut back the sunlight, UV filtered automobile windows to lessen the amount of damage to fabric and vinyl.

In the crafting of art glass, the most well-known is 'didymium'. This has become a generic term over the years for a sodium flare filter that removes the yellow ball of light that occurs when any type of glass that contains sodium (almost all of them) is heated.

Click image for larger version.  Name: 11221478_10153488400512573_6698007446529672053_n.jpg  Views: 5  Size: 57.3 KB  ID: 12250

The above picture is a bench-mounted art glass torch, burning oxygen-propane at approximately 3800 F. The glass being worked is borosilicate art glass (pyrex). The picture on the left is unfiltered, the picture on the right is filtered through a 3rd generation didymium-variant filter. As you can see, the yellow of the flame is totally removed, leaving only the blue-white flame plume. This allows the glass artist to see the work he's doing inside of the flame, which would otherwise be obscured.

Here's the visible light spectrum of the camera filter being used:

Click image for larger version.  Name: Dash-40.jpg  Views: 4  Size: 43.8 KB  ID: 12251

This filter, we've named AUR-40, or simply Dash 40, is a 3rd generation didymium-variant from Schott. Based off the previously available S-8817a ACE glass, this particular filter has a much deeper sodium flare notch, as well as a secondary green/yellow notch. These filters were originally designed for avionics to remove stray distracting colors in the cockpit of commercial and military aircraft.

Here's a color comparison of the previous AUR-92/ACE filter and the new Dash 40 filter:

Click image for larger version.  Name: 11146497_10153010683362961_1816259122164470219_n.jpg  Views: 2  Size: 7.2 KB  ID: 12252

The lens on the left is the Dash 40, the lens on the right is AUR-92/ACE.

Dash 40 and AUR-92/ACE are good filters for working soft glass (soda/lime). However, when the artist is working borosilicate glass, the amount of heat energy required, as well as the overall size differences in the pieces being worked requires different filtration requirements. To meet these needs, I designed several different filters combining both generic welding filters as well as specialized IR filters.

Bad Optics Alert: multifocal IOLs

In my practice, I strongly recommend against multifocal IOLs for all my cataract patients who are contemplating surgery.

Unlike a spectacle multifocal, where a patient can adjust their head position to select whichever part of the lens they want to use, with multifocal IOLs (intraocular lenses) the patient has no such choice. He/she must always look through all parts of the lens that optically fills his/her pupil, no matter what the head position. The same is pretty much true of soft multifocal contact lenses, but at least those can be removed.

IOLs are a one shot permanent fix, so you don't want something in your eye that cannot be easily removed unless it will give you one optic and one only. And explanting a plastic IOL you don't like is not a cake walk. It's far more difficult and complicated than explanting a human lens.

Worst of all, as an optometrist, none of my skills will help an eye that has been permanently blurred due to at least half of the available light being out of focus at ANY viewing distance.

Don't talk to me about how wonderfully grandma did with her multifocal IOLs. Sure, anything would be better than what she had pre-op. And sure, she doesn't need glasses post-op because they won't help!! The truth is, grandma wouldn't have minded wearing some reading glasses post op if they would just give her a crisp 20/20.

I just made a patient cry.

Evening folks,

First off this isn't what it sounds like.

A little while ago a women came into my store, lets call her Ms.C, asking if I would be willing to adjust her glasses from some other optical. Me being Mr. Nice smiled my best and said I'd help out. Now, at a glance they were just fine, deep progressives, Silhouette rimless , strait, even, 6% panto, the lightest weight set up I can think of. Ms.C tells me that she has severe pain at the nose pads and at the top of the ear where the temple sits as well as behind at the temple tip. So, I take a generous amount of time studying the way they are sitting and begin to adjust the fit. The adjustments are small, a light spreading of pads and ~15 degree twist toward her face, and I bend the temple tip away from her head slightly. This process is repeated twice, and each time I can see she is visibly relieved. On the last adjustment, she quite literally bursts into tears. I am honestly speechless and a little concerned.

So, I spend a time talking with Ms.C about these problems more. She is a lifetime glasses wearer of the last 60+ years and these problems only developed within the last year and half. She wears a large set of wrap around sunglasses that fit over her silhouettes that has never given her any problems at all. They are large boxy, with strait temples. We spend some time talking about frame designs and what might help her, and I recommend she ask a doctor about what I can only guess must be a sinus issue of some severity. She will return later this week to discuss it more.

To you:
Have you encountered this before? I have never in my life seen someone so relieved to have such a minuscule adjustment made. Thoughts?
I just made a patient cry.

Optical Literature inquiry

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any eye care related companies that send out magazines or optical related mail in canada that you can sign up for. If anyone knows of any free ones or of any ones with a cost and could let me and our fellow Canadian Optiborders know that would be great.

Thanks guys and gals,

I want to start my own colored contact lens company. How do I do it?

Greetings,

I want to start my own brand of colored contact lenses. Kind of like 9mmsfx (natural looking line), FXeyes (natural looking line), and other small colored cosmetic contact lens businesses.

However, I cannot find any information out there about how to go about doing this.

I assume it's all about connecting with a contact lens manufacturer (preferably located in the United States). I do not have the start up capital to build my own factory, so I will have to work in tandem with a manufacturer.

Does anyone here know of any contact lens manufacturers that work with small businesses, or how to go about the process of starting a colored contact business?

Also, how can I get optometrists to carry and recommend my lenses?

Thank you.

Additive Manufacturing of Optically Transparent Glass
Mediated Matter Group in collaboration with MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering and MIT's Glass Lab
Ancient yet modern, enclosing yet invisible, glass was first created in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt 4,500 years ago. Precise recipes for its production - the chemistry and techniques - often remain closely guarded secrets. Glass can be molded, formed, blown, plated or sintered; its formal qualities are closely tied to techniques used for its formation. From the discovery of core-forming process for bead-making in ancient Egypt, through the invention of the metal blow pipe during Roman times, to the modern industrial Pilkington process for making large-scale flat glass; each new breakthrough in glass technology occurred as a result of prolonged experimentation and ingenuity, and has given rise to a new universe of possibilities for uses of the material. This show unveils a first of its kind optically transparent glass printing process called G3DP. G3DP is an additive manufacturing platform designed to print optically transparent glass. The tunability enabled by geometrical and optical variation driven by form, transparency and color variation can drive; limit or control light transmission, reflection and refraction, and therefore carries significant implications for all things glass. The platform is based on a dual heated chamber concept. The upper chamber acts as a Kiln Cartridge while the lower chamber serves to anneal the structures. The Kiln Cartridge operates at approximately 1900°F and can contain sufficient material to build a single architectural component. The molten material gets funneled through an alumina-zircon-silica nozzle. The project synthesizes modern technologies, with age-old established glass tools and technologies producing novel glass structures with numerous potential applications.

The G3DP project was created in collaboration between the Mediated Matter group at the MIT Media Lab, the Mechanical Engineering Department, the MIT Glass Lab and the Wyss Institute. Researchers include : John Klein, Michael Stern, Markus Kayser, Chikara Inamura, Giorgia Franchin, Shreya Dave, James Weaver, Peter Houk and Prof. Neri Oxman.

A selection of Glass pieces will appear in an exhibition at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2016.  The full text version of Additive Manufacturing of Optically Transparent Glass will appear in the September 2015 issue (Vol. 2, Issue 3) of  3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing  (3DP+), under the Editorial leadership of Skylar Tibbits, Director of the MIT Self-Assembly Lab. Details and complete information on 3DP+ can be found  at here. The patent Additive Manufacturing of Optically Transparent Glass was filed on April 25 of 2014.

Prism in Sunglasses and Personalized Lenses? Two Random Questions

Two random questions (ELI5)

1) At LensCrafters when a person picks out a large frame, an aviator for example, and cutout won't accommodate the 70mm finished lens, they would place the OC wherever necessary to make it work. Is this typical practice for large frames? If prism is prescribed to "pull" a lazy eye, wouldn't unprescribed prism be harmful? Or at the very least make it more difficult to see as the prescription gets stronger?

2) LensCrafters also does personalized progressive lenses (vertex distance, frame wrap, ect) so you get like -1.46 Sphere Power + 2.47 Add power, but they didn't do it for single vision. Do any places do this for single vision? And if not i assume there's a reason? Is it because most optometrists only measure in quarter diopters anyway so going from -2 to -1.95 could actually be worse because you were measured at -2.08 which was rounded down to -2? But once you get up to a higher RX like -7 it seems like where the lens sits would be a lot more significant and this would be viable.
