Juggling customers

dimanche 31 janvier 2016

In a perfect world customer flow would come through our doors in an orderly fashion. Unfortunately it could be dead one moment and insanely busy an hour later. Some traffic ends up leaving with out being served. You try to acknowledge every one and tell them you will be with them shortly. You have an instinct which interactions will result in a sale now or in the future.Should you start weeding out the best potential prospects as diplomatically as you can and optimize your time or just first come first served?

i.e.
1) internet frame research
2) Been in the neighbourhood shops for the last several months and has already eaten up plenty of your time
3) competitor scalping frame selection
4) just kicking tires
5) looking for a deal that doesn't exist
etc. etc.

Considering Remote Tracing. Asking for advice.

samedi 30 janvier 2016

I'm considering remote tracing and was hoping to get some advice. I thought I would order lenses only and insert them myself. So many questions. Does it really speed up service time, does the system work well, do you own or lease equipment….etc. Any and all advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Safety Glasses Ontario question

vendredi 29 janvier 2016

Hello Canadians,

Just a quick question. I know with safety glasses that the frames have to be ansi certified and show the markings on the frame, but do the lenses have to have the safety monogram aswell? We also monogram our safety lenses here but we had a patient come in with a safety job from another optical that had the safety markings on the frame but no monogram on the lenses and he thought he was ripped off. If you guys have any info on this that would be great.

Adding Optical to a LASIK office: Suggestions welcomed!

Hello everyone!

I work at a LASIK center in the S. California region. We're opening a second location and want to add an optical center to this office. Anyone have any experience/advice on opening an optical at a LASIK center? We're in the process of creating our business plan, but first-hand experience is invaluable and extremely appreciated :smug: Our specific purpose for expanding into optical is to promote awareness in the community for those not ready for LASIK. I would love any input from those not within our region :cool:

Specific questions:
How many frames does an average optical shop carry?
Any references to how and where I can approach frame/lens providers and manufacturers?

THANK YOU!!!
Adding Optical to a LASIK office: Suggestions welcomed!

How would you handle this?

A woman came in today and she was very upset. She purchased her first progressives from me and was having difficulty adapting. She went back to her opthamologists office and this is what they wrote on the new rx...
" Today our optician"s measured this pts glasses and they said there is no reading segment in these glasses. Please remake"

1 Laser marking were difficult to see
2 Upon putting them in the lensometer, it was clear that they ARE progressive
3 They dispense glasses
4 They changed rx to increase total reading power by 3/4 diopter

I brought the patient into the lab to show her on the auto-lensometer that they were indeed progressive, and now she is ticked at doctor

I called the office to ask who wrote the note, only to have the office manager accuse me of being rude
How would you handle this?

Ray tracing question: I am at my wit's end!!

I am studying for the abo ac and right now I'm so mad I could spit.
Question: When the path of light is drawn through a lens, the primary focal point of a diverging lens is:

the answer is "to the right of the lens".
How the &**(#@ is this figured out? There are other questions similar to this one. I thought it was a prism type thing with rays going towards the base but it's not.
I have no clue where to look for this. I am studying the Optical Math Tutorial.

Can someone please help me? I am trying to get help from different sources and no one is biting.

Thanks

I'm a big fan of Bill Maher and seem to get the straight goods from his weekly Friday night show. However, since this a 'forum' where individuals are actually entitled to state an opinion, I would like to hear what our Southern neighbours are saying about the candidacy race for oval office?

Any takers?

ABO Advanced Math

Hello,

I'm sorry if this isn't the right spot for this, but I'm going to give it a shot.
Currently I am studying for the abo-advanced, and going through the Optical Formulas Tutorial. I heard a rumor that they don't allow or provide calculators at the testing sites. Many of these formulas require
a scientific calculator. I am wondering what formulas are on the test? What is the true story about the calculators? Am I expected to do advanced math ( trig ) in my head?

So far I'm going through the book front to back, because I feel that even if it's something that won't be on test it's good to know, but I also want to use my study time as efficiently as possible.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Question about Program / Manually entering with Generator (SGX Gerber Coburn)

dimanche 24 janvier 2016

So working for LC i've always had their Gerber network system to automatically punch in all the data. Now that I'm on my own I'm considering buying a coburn generator but my question is what exactly will i need to do to get this operational?

If i have to calculate any additional information could someone point me in the right direction on where I could find those equations? Or if there is a cheap program that does just this, i don't need inventory management and all the other bells and whistles.

womens sunglass trend

Hey there optiboard goers. I just worked with a patient that wanted comically large sunglasses. She asked me if I thought they were to big. I, of course, expressed that I did think they were big and perhaps a smaller frame for her might be more proportionate. She hemmed and hawed and went back and forth between three mammoth, whacky, laughable frames and chose the biggest. They were ghastly. Truly awful looking. I can understand if the patient was whimsical or silly or hair brained or nonsensical in some way but she appeared pretty grounded as a person. I like to think I have a good sense of these things. I brought over several female employees to help guide us through this sale. I explained to the female opticians that I did not understand what the patient was going for and they said "don't worry baby we got this". I observed as they went back and forth complimenting her choices and style frames that she picked out trying to grasp how and why these immense frames looked so good on such a tiny person.

So, I need you to take me to school on this. I simply do not understand women's sunglass fashion. Can someone please explain this to me?

Kindest regards,

Eric

Anti Glare voiding saftey quality?

I just talked to a lady from another lab who was told by a rep that some types of anti glare on certain lenses are considered to be voiding safety rated lenses? I'm not 100% on what types she is talking about as this is the first I have heard of it. Seams like nonsense to me though, an AR coat will do nothing to the integrity of a lens material. Anyone else hear about this mumbo jumbo?
Anti Glare voiding saftey quality?

Chart...Different Materials

Is there a publication or chart available that lists the various lens materials with their properties such as index and abbe? I am tired and worn out so please don't suggest I do the work myself since many have already done it. Thanks!

Is there a purpose to AR on the back side of a lens?

Is there a purpose to AR on the back (closer to eye) side of the lens? My understanding is this would only be useful if the lens was large enough where light from behind the lens would strike it. Light coming from in front of the lens would be seen no differently whether the lens had antiglare on the rear side correct?

An Odd Issue with Trivex....

Howdy!

I don't post very much here, but today I figured would be an awesome time to do so.

In the past week, I have had two different patients both complain about everything having a yellow hue when looking out of their glases. One patient is in a trifocal with no coatings (full wire frame), and the other is in a SV lens with Crizal Avance (drill mount). Both are in trivex, but neither have transitions or any other lens options.

The other optician in the office as well as our lab guy and I are all stumped as to why these two patients are seeing yellow, especially when we all wear trivex lenses and do not see any odd coloring.

We have all inspected the lenses in various lighting situations against a white paper background and we are not seeing any of the yellow tint that the patients are complaining of.

I have not come across this issue ever in the years I have worked in optical, and I was wondering if anybody else has had a similar issue.

FYI: these lenses are BRAND NEW. They are not aged lenses; they are recently purchased and dispensed.

Thanks in advance!

can anyone recommend online courses?

I recently took the abo exam and passed, I think I would greatly benefit from taking college courses to learn more. The issue is that none of the local colleges have optician programs, the nearest city that does in 250 miles away. Do any of you have any suggestions for an online program? ?

"Why is eyewear so expensive?"

mercredi 20 janvier 2016

After reading 2 optical publications today, both of which talked about customers wanting to know why their glasses cost so much. Neither author mentioned what i feel has been the number one cause of increased cost of glasses for the consumer. VISION CARE PLANS!!!! Most ECP's realized a long time ago that they were going to have to raise their prices so that they were above the allowable's within all of the various vision plans, so they could still make a profit and stay in business. Been in business 34 years and never belonged to any vision plans and hopefully never will! This is why our prices are 30 to 40 percent less than my competitors for the exact same frame and lenses. Seems to be working for us.
Anyone else agree?
"Why is eyewear so expensive?"

Drawing of VCA shapes programmatically - Questions!

I have created a VB6 function to draw the shape on the screen from a VCA shape data. Its working fine with me. But there are some issues worrying me to go for the next level :) I would like to get expert's advice on this matter.

  • This function will take the data from "TRCFMT=1;1000;E;R;F" then draw the shape only if it is in ASCII absolute format (1). How can I read the other formats like Binary absolute format, Binary differential format or Packed binary format?
  • Also how can I read the data if the Radii is unevenly specified(U)?

My VB6 function is as below...

Public Sub DrawShape(Destination As PictureBox, StringPoints As String, DrawColor As ColorConstants, BackColor As ColorConstants)

Const PI = 3.14159265359
Dim StartPoint, EndPoint, StepFactor As Double
Dim Radii() As String
Dim MaxData As Integer
'drawing default
With Destination
.Appearance = 0
.BorderStyle = 1
.ScaleMode = 6 ' in millimeters
.DrawWidth = 2 '.5 ' thickness of the outerline
.AutoRedraw = True
.Cls
.BackColor = BackColor
.ForeColor = DrawColor
If .Width < 80 Then .Width = 80 ' make standard drawing space
If .Height < 50 Then .Height = 50 ' make standard drawing space
End With
Radii = Split(StringPoints, ";") ' getting a complete array of Radii from the string
MaxData = UBound(Radii) ' finding the array count
StartPoint = 0 'drawing the starting point
StepFactor = (PI * 2) / (MaxData + 1)
EndPoint = StepFactor
'Drawing the shape
For i = 0 To MaxData
Destination.Circle (Destination.ScaleWidth / 2, Destination.ScaleHeight / 2), Radii(i) / 115, , StartPoint, EndPoint 'Radii(i) / 115 was default to Radii(i) / 100, each monitor will need adjustment
DoEvents ' let the system handle other load while drawing. it will also make feel like drawing on the screen
StartPoint = EndPoint ' have to start the next line from where the arc was end
EndPoint = StartPoint + StepFactor ' draw the arc until the equally divided stepfactor value
Next
End Sub

Removed the error handling options to reduce the complexity here.
"StringPoints" contains only the radii like below. I had managed to create another function for such array.

2529;2535;2540;2545;2550;2555;2560;2565;2569;2575;2581;2586; 2591;2597;26022607;2613;2619;2625;2630;2633;2635;2639;2643;2 647;2652;2657;2663;2673;26822690;2696;2701;2705;2709;2712;27 16;2720;2723;2726;2729;2733;2735;etc...

Troubleshooting Tips?

I have not run into a lot of troubleshooting in the last year because I strive to do it right the first time so I feel pretty shaky on determining the cause of a problem when one arises. By far, I have only received progressive lenses back as a result. The problems I have narrowed in on are PD measurements and lens types. However, troubleshooting feels like such a painful process for me just because I do not have a discerning eye or enough experience to compile a checklist for the process.

Do you have any tips or tricks that I should keep in mind when troubleshooting?

Or maybe even common problems or patterns you have noticed with the different lens types?

NIHB benefit grid..

Hello hello!

We are an optometry clinic in BC trying to get set up to bill to NIHB/FNHA for our services. The receptionist who worked here before me DID have the clinic set up with NIHB, but stopped billing to them at some point, and consequently I no longer have any information for this!

For those of you in the rest of Canada - in BC the billing goes through the First Nations Health Authority, although the benefits/benefit codes are the same as through the NIHB.

I have found all the forms I need to get us set up, except for the benefit grid. Does anyone have such a thing they could send my way, or point me in the right direction as to finding it? I have had no luck trying to get through to the FNHA office here in Vancouver.. I leave messages on the machine and no one ever returns my calls :(

Thanks for any and all help!

They are designed by LMS experts who work with the lens designers to get an even more effective product with regards to system, process and flow to ensure the results equal expectations while increasing processing efficiency. This is what we are all about and the reason the offerings have been so well received so far. Not one person in the optical chain has declined to participate in our platform.

Learning the Art of Frame Selection

Of all the aspects of opticianry that one should aim to master, frame selection seems to be the most difficult. I've read the excellent chapter in System for Ophthalmic Dispensing on frame selection, however I still find it difficult to produce good frame selections while helping people out on the shop floor. I try and browse 20/20 to look at ads showing well-selected frames, but it still seems difficult to pick out appropriate frames under "pressure", regardless of how much theory I study.

Does anyone have any suggestions to improve frame selection skills? Too often I'll pick out a string of frames and every one turns out to be less than ideal, and this leaves a poor impression on the patient. Is it just a matter of practice, practice, practice...?

Sales tax - DME: She taxes me...She taxes me not?

Some states charge sales tax on DME (durable medical equipment) and some don't. In Utah, we do because we do nothing but elect certifiably insane nut jobs to bash out our tax code. :) At any rate, my question for the collective today is this:

If a managed care plan such as VSP or EyeMed requires a "material co-payment" in addition to the lens feature co-payments, should that "material co-payment" be taxed as well?

My answer has always been an unequivocal yes. As here, all DME goods are taxed, and in fact, there's even a specific line denoting prescription eyewear and contact lenses are never to be tax exempt. We do not tax exam or any medical service charges, and therefore do not charge tax on exam co-payments.

I have a co-worker here however, who doesn't collect tax on the material co-payment, thinking that it is somehow separate from the other material charges. I believe this is in error.

What's your take oracle? :)

Help!!

My Santinelli 9000 wheel made some noise for a minute, then quit spinning, and I smell a faint burnt smell. Assuming the motor fried. Anyone know if these can be purchased and installed by myself? Got a stack of jobs and unhappy glasses wearers, of course. :frown: thanks in advance for any advice anyone has...

Stock Single Vision Lenses and AR

I'll ask the question bluntly: Which stock single vision lenses do you use? We have used Seiko with their Surpass ECP AR and they have been solid and at a very good price, but changes with Seiko/Hoya have me looking elsewhere. Luzerne sells Younger stock lenses at a good price. Any thoughts about the Younger AR coating?

Hoya labs will be picking up the Seiko stock lenses, I'm told very soon, but now may be a good time to reassess what we are selling.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Filling out an RX pad, coping the information on PT's chart in South Carolina

I have a current situation where I've been instructed that I (licensed SC Optician) am not able to copy RX information from a PT's chart to the OD's prescription pad. This information is being passed down from a manager that is unlicensed and also a district manager that has no retail experience at all. I've looked on south carolina's code of laws and cannot find a concrete answer on this topic. I've worked in two different locations for the same company, and this was never an issue before. The previous location had a license(not me) that would fill out RX pads and sign for the Dr. (Under the Dr's supervision and permission). Any information would be greatly appreciated, or direction on where to look.

PS. I called our state board today and they directed me to the SC CODE OF LAWS. That really didn't answer my question.

Thanks again,

-Brandon.
