Senator Schumer and AOA President-Elect Encourage FTC to Change Eyeglass Rule
NEW YORKFollowing the Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) request for comment on the Ophthalmic Practice Rule (Eyeglass Rule) and the Contact Lens Rule, as reported by VMail Sept. 4, 2015, some prominent politicians and eyecare professionals have added their voices to request changes to the Eyeglass Rule.
Standing in front of a LensCrafters on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) held a press conference and released a statement calling on the FTC to update regulations on eyeglass prescriptions requiring eyecare providers to give complete eyeglass prescription information to consumers. He cited sky-high prices and the need to shop around at stores and online among the reasons for changing the FTC rules to promote competition and dramatically lower eyeglass prices.
American Optometric Association (AOA) president-elect Andrea P. Thau, OD, of New York, appeared at the news conference to ask the Senator to investigate any control over the market that some eyewear companies and some insurance companies that also sell glasses might have.
In his statement, Schumer requested that the FTC allow for 21st-century competition by allowing patients to obtain a full copy of their eyeglass prescriptions so they can take that prescription anywhere they wanteven online. Eyeglasses are a necessity for millions of Americans, yet sky-high prices are making them unaffordable. We need more oversight when it comes to the cost of eyeglasses and one way to do that is to require patients get their full prescriptions so they can shop around in stores and online for the best deal. Consumers need more options when it comes to eyeglasses and that's why the FTC should update the Eyeglass Rule in a way that helps spur competition and dramatically lower prices.
Schumer specifically requested that the FTC consider the following changes to the Eyeglass Rule: require eyecare providers to provide complete eyeglass prescription information to consumers, including specifics like pupillary distance. Require prescription providers to verify prescription information for third party sellers in a reasonable time, allowing a consumer to take their prescription wherever they desire. Require eyeglass prescriptions to last longer than just one year, so consumers have more time to comparison shop.
Additionally, Schumer said his push is being made to spur the FTC to recognize the increasing role of e-commerce in the eyeglass marketplace.
When asked what brought this issue to Senator Schumers attention, his office told VMail: Our office became aware of this issue from speaking with constituents over the years. Whether at a fair or parade or incoming constituent opinion calls, this issue has been put on the Senators radar by New Yorkers. We looked into it and decided to take action based on the FTCs own plans to revise the eyeglass rule. We are currently working with stakeholders on all sides, including eyecare professionals and the FTC, as we further examine this issue and the imminent changes to the eyeglass rule.
Many others, both inside and outside the profession, have already commented on the FTCs Public Comments Page as well as in response to Vision Mondays Facebook and Twitter posts about the FTCs requests for comments on its Eyeglass and Contact Lens Rules.
Many of the comments cited the adage you get what you pay for, explaining that there is a lot of technology that costs money behind producing quality eyeglasses. Others stated that adding the PD to a patients prescription will not alone encourage competition and ignores the need for additional measurements and a fitting of the final pair of glasses by an eyecare professional. The issue here is to better educate the consumer, one Facebook respondent said.
Comments on the FTC page numbered 29 at press time and came from both eyecare professionals and consumers.
In the comments, consumers complained about the difficulty of obtaining their prescription and/or their PD from their eyecare professionals and the timing when a new prescription is needed. Many cited their desire to buy eyeglasses online and were similarly worded.
In their comments, eyecare professionals attempted to educate readers about the differences between a refraction and a comprehensive examination, and they also mentioned that their professionalism is often overlooked by their patients. One ECP who stated that her practice attempts to give every patient a printed copy of their prescription at the end of every exam, said, Having a mandate to release a prescription is unnecessary as any ethical doctor will release a prescription to a patient at any time as long as the prescription has not expired.
Anyone can post additional comments on the FTC site by Oct. 26, 2015, and instructions for filing comments appear in the Federal Register Notices linked to above.
An AOA representative told VMail that the organization would submit comprehensive formal comments on the rule before the Oct. 26, 2015 FTC deadline. Thau was not available for additional comment at press time.

Australian Dispensing Optician looking for a new adventure
mardi 29 septembre 2015
Hi all, long time reader first time caller, well poster as it seems.
I have been working as a dispensing optician since 2003 and currently working in a behavioural practice (since 2009).
I have spent some time over the years in BC and AB and more recently toying with the idea of relocating my life to your beautiful country. I am curious as to approximate wages and availability of work as a dispenser.
Is there any further education needing to be done from the Australian Certificate IV optical dispensing course to work in Canada?
Im 29 years old and have quite a bit of experience under my belt in the industry.
Thanks in advance
Brenton

Pre-Cast Reverse Slab Off
Has anybody here had luck using the reverse slab off lenses from Younger?
I've heard things about their first and second generation lenses, but are they better now?
Any help would be appreciated.

Beaks and aging.
Has anyone ever had the super-vertex patient whose bridge looks like a '68 Firebird and whose eyes are set back in two caves, and you try to put a frame on them and you could have a party between the back surface of the lens and the corneal apex and they invariably wear progressives and feel like the zones are too narrow and the off-axis distortions bother them too much?
Yeah, me too.
I used to see quite a few frames with the "convex bridge" back in the roaring '90's. You know, they were usually those round, brown, retro-ish frames with usually a gold (but sometimes even antique gold--yuck) bridge that kind of wrapped around the schnozz and could bring the lenses back closer to the eye?
Are there any frames like that, anymore?

Do you post package prices for non VCP patients?
samedi 26 septembre 2015
Hello,
New to the board... what a great resource!
We are updating our pricing and are debating whether or not to display our some of our package lens pricing. We want to keep it very simple, but are thinking of having a sign in the optical for, say, our basic SV poly w/AR package and our poly (middle of the road) PAL w/AR package. We don't want to discourage patients, but are also thinking that people may believe our glasses are more expensive than they actually are.
What do you think?

kappa edger! help quick! please! part deux
My kappa ctd edger is having random issues. The lens clamp will not move at all. It just stopped working all of a sudden. I can hear the hydraulics trying to move the arm forward, and it moves about 1mm every time I hit my clamp left button, but it will not budge. The worst part is I have no error code. Edger thinks everything is fine, I did an 'self-diagnosis' and everything came out good. i can't see if anything is stuck. in 10 years, I've never had an edger problem without an actual error message so i'm completely lost. I really don't want to call my essilor tech, because he's an ***.
any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why do we sell high-end lenses to mid/low income consumers? We're killing ourselves
vendredi 25 septembre 2015
Patients don't want to pay two or three times the price for lenses that are 10-20% better. Why do we sell patients with average incomes top-end progressives for $400 and $120 AR coatings? Because WE think they're great. I do, but THEY don't notice any difference that's worth to THEM the extra $300 over something like a "low-end" freeform or Navigator that we can sell for $200 all day long. The exception would be "high-end" markets but that represents a tiny fraction of the market. We can't ALL be high-end, by definition that's impossible.
When the consumer can't justify to themselves the $500-700 bill we DO look like the bad guys. We're GIVING our business to the internet, just so we can "feel" high-end or "professional".
My shop used to try to sell high end lenses to everyone. We had average tickets of $500-$700. We switched to inexpensive PAL's and have sold thousands of pairs for $160 (Plastic no AR) and advertised great prices. 2 years later business is up. I'm just saying. Crizal is great but I talk every single customer that mentions it out of it because I guarantee you it's not 200% better than FEA Industry's AR, not even close.
You could argue that it's not up to us to decide what the customer can afford, but the truth is the consumer doesn't have the information to decide what the best value is. Unless of course you want to make them 6 pairs of glasses with different PAL's/coatings to see which they like better and decide for themselves if they should spend $200 or $600. It's part of our job IMHO to offer products that offer a proper balance of cost/benefit.
Let's stop getting sold on the fractional improvement they're getting from lenses that cost 300% more.
This is all my opinion based on my 20 years experience and 8 years of ownership of an independent optician owned practice.
I welcome any comments and differing opinions.
Note: I do believe that these products are better and if 500-1000 bucks is a drop in the bucket to a particular customer, that's fine. But we're doing ourselves, our businesses and our customers a disservice by acting as if they have to spend 2 weeks salary or they're not going to be able to see a dang thing. One particular very successful practice I know of sells almost strictly Navigators and does $3M a year in sales and has been voted by local publications as the best optical in town.

Hello
Complete High End Dispensary EYE DESIGNS MILAN COLLECTION
jeudi 24 septembre 2015
My plans to open an independent dispensary have changed. I have enough displays to outfit your new office or do a remodel at significant savings over new. These displays new with tax and shipping would be over $60,000.
The Displays I have, are in secure storage in a suburb of Minneapolis Minnesota, they are the MILAN COLLECTION by EYEDESIGNS.
They are top of the line displays and I feel will have an immediate impact and make a great impression for any office that is going to be adding or remodeling a dispensary. The main frame boards (6) have an led lid graphic display at the top of each board. Each board can display 64 pieces which you can use the stock graphics, or have a custom print made to suit your preference these are illuminated with leds. they also have small LED pendant lights thats are on a beautiful thin double metal wire base that direct light directly on the frames themselves. I have 2 more beautiful displays that have I believe has 6 glass shelves, these are very customizable and allow for great merchandising displays, these have full length LED lights to light up the entire display. I also have 1 Led Shelve unit it has 5 shelves that are illuminated from the inside projecting light up and down, this unit is awesome as well. The glass shelve units and the LED shelf unit, are 36" wide and have a deep base coming out 24 1/2 inches from the wall, the bases are also 24" high for a total height of 90", these 3 units also have 4 full width drawers that are thin maybe 5 inches apiece, they are great for storing more frames or securing frames away from sticky fingers. The frame boards have shallow bases that come out I believe is 16' or 18" my memory, and they are 43" wide again with a total height of 90".
These displays are probably the easiest displays to install ever, the bases have holes in the top and are freestanding on adjustable metal legs, the top of the unit has wooden dowels that fit into the holes on the base, and from there you plug them in and install 2 wall anchors to make sure top is secure to the wall. I also have 3 very substantial Mirrors, these are built out of the same wood as the displays, the mirror units are 18 wide by 84" tall and the wood part is a full 3" thick, these are very rich and definitely add to the beauty of these displays.
I also have 3 dispensing tables from the Milan collection as well, these are very modern and have a single steel leg supporting the table top, and the other end meshes up with the desk/computer base, the base itself 22" square, with the desktop itself coming out an addition 36" for a total of 22x58.

I also have a number of nice chairs which could be used at the dispensing tables and the waiting room, these also are very modern and nice and work very well with the look. I believe I have around 10-12 of those, but not 100% sure on the exact number.
In Summary I have
1. 6 Frame Boards and shallow bases @ $4534.00 each =$27204.00
2. 2 Glass shelve units with elliptical cutouts, model G5EP436ML @ $5307.00 = $10614.00
3. 1 Led shelve unit FSD4D36Ml @$6513.00 = $6513.00
4. 3 dispensing table bases model # DTADCABML @$968.00, plus desktop model DT361LML @ $471.00 = $4317.00
5. 3 Mirror Wall Units model FLMPML @ $709.00 = $2127.00
6. 10 chairs?(not 100% sure on number) @ $300.00 = $3000.00
Total for all of this is $53775.00 plus shipping and tax is easily over $60,000 if were purchasing brand new from Eye Design,
I am asking $30,000 or for the best REASONABLE offer.
I can be reached here or email at bowhunter59@gmail.com or my cell is 612-716-0866.
I do not have the best photos but do have a few I can send otherwise you can look on the Eye Design website under Milan collection to see the impact and beauty these displays have in an office. I keep getting a failed message trying to post the pictures i do have.
Thanks for looking, Jeff.

2015-2016 Independent Frame / Eyewear Sales Rep Commissions
Hello:
Inquiring to what independent, 1099, straight commission reps are these days. Interested in both plano and rx frame types, in a mid luxury frame ~200/pair msrp market.
Also are you being paid your percentage from the msrp price, or the negotiated out the door, order price from the store / practice? How does your percentage / commission get effected upon returns for that order?
Finally what kind of wholesale percentage are you providing to the store off the msrp?
Thank you for the insight,
-Jerry

Adventure in Alaska
If you became an optician in order to help people, love the great outdoors, enjoy hunting and fishing and winter sports and thrive on adventure, then I have the perfect position for you. My company provides eyecare to native Alaskans in over 100 villages in the extreme environment of Bush Alaska. We offer a great salary plus benefits including a 401K plan, health insurance, dental and life insurance. Plus you will get plenty of time off to enjoy Alaska. If you have watched the Alaska shows on the discovery channel you know what I mean. This is a full-time position and requires you to relocate to Anchorage.
Our company was established in 1959 and is proud of the work we do, filling the eye care requirements of Eskimos and Natives in this region. This is an excellent opportunity if you are the right person. I guarantee you will never have a more interesting and rewarding experience. If you've got the ability to understand different cultures, and are flexible enough to endure the unique working conditions, you can do this. This job is definitely not for everyone, but for those who love the great outdoors and the wilderness, you may never get another chance like this.
Work is performed primarily in the Bush areas of Alaska, with almost all of the work being done in this extreme environment. Most of the time you travel with an optometrist who performs exams. Sleeping arrangements will vary and may be less than optimum at times. Travel will be by jet, small one and two engine planes, snow machine, boat, or if lucky you may even get to ride in a dog sled. Working conditions will be whatever is available at the village being visited. The work day will also vary depending upon the purchasing patterns of the villagers. Approximately 14 trips will be scheduled throughout the year, amounting to between 160 to 170 days per year. Usually, there is about 2 weeks to 20 days between trips. After planning your next trip and tying up any loose ends from your previous trip, which takes about 2-3 days at most, your work for the month is done. Expect to earn $50,000+ which includes commission and bonuses. Excellent benefits include 401K pension plan with employer participation, hospitalization, dental, and life insurance.
Requirements:
A good knowledge of optics, and able to perform the duties of an optician in the adverse conditions of the Bush areas.
Knowledge of survival techniques in remote areas and or wilderness areas is a plus.
Ability to understand different cultures, and be flexible enough to make people feel at ease when dealing with them.
Must be able to keep accurate records and reports and have basic computer skills.
An opticians license from any state which is transferable to Alaska is a plus. Most states that are licensed are accepted by Alaska.
Call or send me an email with your resume and questions and I will give you all the details about this position.

Briot Accura CX dressing sticks
My polishing wheel is working less than optimally in terms of the final finish. I would like to hit it with a dressing stick. Briot no longer has the dressing stick or wheel in their e-catalog for this model for the polishing wheel. They only have it for the roughing and finishing wheels. Does anyone know the specifications of the polishing wheel and what dressing stick is appropriate for it? Thank you.

Inexpensive Kid's Frames?
mardi 22 septembre 2015
Hi all,
Could anyone suggest who to go to for bulk kids frames? I have seen them for as low as $1-2 with a larger quantity order, but can't seem to remember where I've seen them. Some background: our office offers a decent frame selection, but the doctor also sees a lot of patients with medicaid. She also does some charity work throughout the year, and we need to keep costs down in order to make this feasible. Unfortunately, we are limited on what we can offer in these situations and still be able to cover our costs. Even in the cases where we can show parents the benefits of "upgrading" and purchasing frames/lenses outside of the parameters of their insurance, I like to offer an insurance pair as a backup. If anything, we aren't just leaving money on the table that way AND the kid has a backup.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone look at the self-rx tools by Eyenetra and TheEyeScanApp?
They are new but have technology that can help anyone ensure they are getting an RX that is at least close vs some of what we see from techs. We are going to try both out on patients and test the results vs the refraction they receive from elsewhere. We will also use them to help demonstrate to folks who think they do not need glasses at all after some procedure and never will again.
This is the future as far as I can tell and we want to be part of anything to help the patient see as well as possible.
Thoughts from folks are welcome and let the RX police be on notice that technology does a better job than most tech's at an MD office; we almost have no issues with an RX done by an OD but from any MD office is a 35% chance of disaster.

One of the doctor's dad loves this thing, glass lenses, they probably should have classified them as a weapon. So i'd either like to find him one of those, OR if anyone can point me in a direction of something with similar durability :)

Average life of a frame warmer? Should I buy new/used?
lundi 21 septembre 2015
Hi, I'm looking to purchase a new frame warmer and have a local opportunity to purchase a used Hilco TempMaster Deluxe Frame Warmer that is about 3 years old and has been used regularly at another shop or purchase a new one for a higher price. Just curious how long you guys/gals find your frame warmer lasting you on average and if there is anything I should be concerned about with purchasing a 3 year old unit that has been used daily, thanks.

Hoya/Seiko Nightmare
dimanche 20 septembre 2015
I feel like our shop is under siege because of the AR failures with Seiko lenses since the Hoya takeover. Are we the only ones experiencing this? We have for years ordered our lenses direct from Seiko in Hopkins, Minnesota or New Jersey (Prominent, Prestige II, etc). Hoya, as you know took over their labs earlier this year, closed them down, and moved everything to Dallas. ALL the cr-39 AR failed within the first four months. We are on the second round of do-overs with many patients. Now 9 months later we are starting to see more Trivex fails.
We have been assured everything was fixed July 13, but how to know? I feel like we are in a news blackout. I know not many optical shops ordered their lenses directly from Seiko (formerly Pentax), but we can't be the only ones in this situation. Anyone else?
We gave up on Seiko PALs in July and have moved most of our business to Shamir through Luzerne, but, wow, we sold a lot of Seiko product this year and I fear a never-ending re-do scenario.
Thanks for reading my rant. Let me know if you have any insights or similar situations.

Comparing Trivex with 1.56 index
I need to compare the 2 materials. What I think I know so far is that Trivex is more difficult to work with, harder on finishing equipment, but more durable. 1.56 index is easier to finish, but seems to be available in a more impact resistant version than the old Ormex (essilor) version?
1.56 seems to have better ABBE value than Trivex, and is quite a bit cheaper.
Trivex is 100% UV protected by absorption while 1.56 is somewhat UV protected and is now available with infused filter that takes out all UV + some visible blue (Hivex UV++? by Conant)
Saw this last version yesterday at Vision Expo. Is somewhat yellow, no where near as yellow as Blue Tech
Soooooo, here goes:
1. correct any errors above please
2. are there any other negatives lurking out there for either material?
3. any other positives for either?
4. are either materials environmentally safe (recyclable without too much trouble, lenses, pieces and swarf, and is machining both of them safe)?
5. any other comments will be appreciated.

ZEISS sponsors SIGHT - The Story of Vision
Las Vegas, September 18, 2015
SIGHT The Story of Vision is an international documentary about the importance of good vision, about the progress in eye care and vision solutions over the past 800 years, the impact of the global vision crisis on life and work; and importantly, about the efforts taken by individuals and organizations to fight this crisis.
This documentary was previewed at a ZEISS sponsored event at Vision Expo West in Las Vegas and received enthusiastic reviews from the 300 Vision Industry and media representatives who attended the event.
The SIGHT project is an international initiative, involving award winning directors and filmmakers, an advisory board of medical, business and science advisors, and collaboratively sponsored by several major corporations and organizations from the vision care industry. Initiator and filmmaker Kris Koenig and Public Broadcasting Systems acknowledge that this industry-wide initiative has brought companies together with a common objective to educate and raise awareness of the significant challenges in providing good quality eye care and vision solutions to the millions of people affected by poor vision.
ZEISS is one of the primary sponsors of the SIGHT story and the corresponding SEEING planetarium show.
One of the most precious gifts we are given: vision
Natural vision is one of lifes most precious gifts. About 80 per cent of all information we process comes through our eyes. For the hundreds of millions of people around the world who have limited or no access to eye care and are visually impaired, for the millions who have no opportunity to get treatment for preventable blindness, and for those that simply cant access simple vision solutions, the ability to fully participate in life is limited.
The SIGHT story, a public television documentary, recounts the centuries-old history and science of vision with all its implications for humanity and society. Our ability to see determines our quality of life, yet many of us take our sight for granted. A great portion of the worlds population struggles to see, and none of us will be able to escape vision loss in our lifetime, says Kris Koenig.
Lack of access to eye care and vision solutions are still global problems
Poor vision is the number one reason for children leaving school early. Poor vision reduces work time by up ten years and has further consequences for life, education and productivity at work. Ninety (90) per cent of the 285 million visually impaired or blind people with no access to modern eye and vision care live in developing countries. The World Health Organization estimates that the worlds gross-domestic product could be US$270 Billion higher if all of these people could get refractive correction and access to medical eye care.
ZEISS has been supporting initiatives to fight preventable blindness for many years now and is engaged in providing people in the developing world with access to modern eye care, says Karen Roberts, vice president at ZEISS Vision Care business group and a member of the advisory board for the project. Creating more awareness for low vision, vision impairment and preventable blindness as real world health issues is a major step in helping fight this issue.
The Story of Vision will reveal the vision crisis that is taking place across the globe and the amazing individuals who fight to overcome it. The documentary will present the research focused on curing blindness and improving low vision in our aging population, and cover the intersection of optics, digital science and medicine that hold promises for all of us to keep our sight, explained Koenig. The film will also show the history of using optics to correct vision and the fashion that keeps glasses on our noses.
Over the past 12 months, the film crew traveled to the United States, India, Africa, Australia, Vietnam, China, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Peru, Germany and Italy to capture fascinating information and stories about vision on film. This also allowed them to demonstrate the global nature of the vision crisis.
SIGHT will be aired first in the United States in Fall, 2015, but will be shown by other broadcasters in Europe, Latin America and Asia and will eventually be seen by millions of viewers around the world. The SEEING planetariums show, scheduled for premiere in early 2016, will tell the story of vision in a three-dimensional, full-dome presentation. This will be made available to the 1,200 planetariums around the world. This will also be supplemented with an education program, SEEING: From Photons to Our Mind, which has been specially created to teach older school age children and their families how human vision works.

Publications for ophthalmic optics
Hello All!
It's been a while since posting (I've been living in Vietnam for a while now, but coming home soon). One issue I've found being an optician in the US is the lack of publications and/or journals dedicated to ophthalmic optics. There are a few ophthalmic and optometric journals but they generally deal with pathology and are only available to doctors or members of ophthalmic academies. And getting legitimate white papers from companies is like pulling teeth and is usually is just a bloated advertisement. Of course I, like so many of us, have subscribed to our go-to opticianry related magazines but have found them severely lacking in pertinent information, overly commercial-driven, and simply "fluff" (as far as the science of our craft goes). Has anyone found a solution to this? I would love to be able to regularly read up on advances in the world of ophthalmic optics without the commercial bias or puff pieces on matters like how to up-sell AR. Help me out guys! :help:

Brazos to make 3x its money with Vision Source sale

Marcolin...
jeudi 17 septembre 2015
Anyone that carries Tom Ford: Have you been notified that you will have to pick up an additional line in order to keep your "authorized Tom Ford dealer" account?
I was notified last week...
Essentially, Marcolin is mandating that any Tom Ford account must bring in a second Marcolin line in order to keep their current Tom Ford account.
Thoughts?

Question for Frame Manufacturers
Hi my name is robbie, I'm new to frame manufacturing and I wanted to know what markings I need to put into the frames to comply.
Do I need to put CE and how does that work? Will my manufacturer be able to put that in for me?
And what other markings are necessary?

Like-new Essilor Visioffice for sale! This includes all equipment originally supplied with the machine, and everything is in EXCELLENT condition. This unit cost $10,000.00 brand new and, honestly, is in close to the exact same condition it was at that time. I'm asking for $5000.00, but will consider any offer. Vuarnet sunglasses
A frame rep recently brought us literature. They are doing glass Rx lenses in their labs. Is there a market for hi priced glass lenses? The name Vuarnet still is a recognized name in this industry. I would love to take the plunge. Does anybody on Optiboard have an opinion?

The importance of e-retailing continues to grow in eyewear in Canada
Eyewear in Canada
Eyewear in Canada remains a consolidated industry
Sales of eyewear in Canada remain divided between a small number of large multinational eyewear companies, which between them account for nearly all of the recognisable brands in the industry. This high level of sales divided among such a small number of companies has made it incredibly difficult for new players to enter the industry. In contact lenses, there are four US-based pharmaceutical companies which dominate sales, trading on their vast experience of scientific progress and innovation. In spectacles, there is a higher number of brands present offering spectacles frames as there is more room for a more diverse range of fashionable styles, although almost of them are manufactured by Luxottica Group SpA, irrespective of the brand under which they are sold.
The importance of e-retailing continues to grow in eyewear in Canada
The retailing of eyewear in Canada remains concentrated in the hands of very few optical goods stores. This is because of the strict regulation of the retailing of eyewear in Canada, which prevents the sale of contact lenses and prescription spectacles throughout any retailer which is not officially certified and registered to do so.
As the internet continues to encroach on more aspects of life in Canada, the country’s eyewear industry is being strong influenced as well. Online sales of contact lenses continue to increase among Canadians, with Clearly Contacts leading development and growth in this area. The choice of products and prices charged online are driving increasing numbers of consumers to turn to internet retailing when making purchasing decisions. The influence of internet retailing in the retail distribution of eyewear in Canada thus continues to grow at the expense of traditional store-based retail outlets.

Help with Progressive Identifiier
Couldn't find this watermark in the 2013 Progressive Identifier. Can anyone help?
Circles on the 180 - Nasal side has "SM" above the circle and 153 below. Temple side has 175 below the circle and 14 below that.
Assuming S is Seiko Surmount but couldn't find any reference to the M. By Seiko's way of doing things on some lenses, the 153 could be 1.50 add and corridor "3". OR 153 could refer to Trivex and 175 on the other side is the add. 14 maybe referring to the corridor or min fitting height?
Anyway if someone could tell me exactly what this is it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

UnitedHealthcare Ranks Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Vision Plan Providers
mercredi 16 septembre 2015
Vision Plan Coverage and Cost Are the Primary Drivers of Overall Customer Satisfaction WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.:
20 November 2014 UnitedHealthcare ranks highest in customer satisfaction with vision plan providers, performing particularly well in the coverage, cost and communication factors, according to the J.D. Power 2014 Vision Plan Satisfaction ReportSM released today. The report, now in its second year, measures customer satisfaction with vision plan providers based on five factors (in order of importance): coverage, cost, communications, customer service and reimbursement. Satisfaction is calculated on a 1,000-point scale.
KEY FINDINGS Among vision plan members who rate overall satisfaction outstanding (10 on a 10-point scale), 87 percent say they definitely will choose their current provider in the future, compared with the report average of 42 percent. Among members who rate their overall satisfaction outstanding, the average number of positive recommendations is 3.5, an increase from the report average of 1.4. Overall satisfaction among vision plan members is 709. While coverage is critical to satisfaction, members are also very sensitive to cost, said Rick Johnson, director of the healthcare practice at J.D. Power. Its extremely important to provide clear communications about the plans benefits so members fully understand what they are paying for and the value of having the plan. When communications are clear and concise, satisfaction and loyalty metrics are likely to increase.
Vision Plan Rankings: UnitedHealthcare (732) ranks highest, followed by EyeMed (717). The 2014 Vision Plan Satisfaction Report is based on responses from 3,063 vision plan members. The study was fielded from October through November 2014. - See more at: http://ift.tt/1YezP6L

Specialty Chemistry Clips
We have a patient that has a neuro issue that affects her pupils making her constantly fully dilated along with other issues affecting sensitivity. We are using a combination of several devices to accommodate all of her needs. However, I am needing a special clip, preferably a chem clip with a 7-10% transmittance (near black-out).
I know folks with the Me1200's have been edging special clips like regressive readers and all kinds of fun things.
Anyone know of a lab that is willing and able to cut a clip outside eyenavisions perimeters and process this for me?
Both my patient and myself appreciate any and all help.
