I have some new opticians here in the office and I am trying to teach them the best way to bring up and sell multiple pairs, anybody have some updated advice on the best way to have success with this?

Board Certification in FL
A Dr. friend of mine has asked that I look into taking the CL fitting course to become board certified in FL. I agree with him that this is a great next logical step in my career, but of course he is interested in how it would benefit his practice. My question is do any of you that are board certified in FL have a schedule similar to a doc to do fittings through out the day? Also, what is a going rate for a CL fitting (with or without eyeglass rx)? Can insurance be billed under the optician or the doctor?

Bausch & Lomb Vertometer 21-65-70
"Inherited" a really old lensometer/vertometer from one of our docs who was going to toss it out because it no longer lights up. Checked everything over and found that the wires on the light source had worked loose and shorted out. Re-soldered them in place and macgyvered a new holder for the socket. Bulb is toast however and replacements are difficult to come by. My question is, would it be possible/advisable to re-wire the whole thing and put in a battery powered LED light source? The old wiring is just that... OLD. I'm afraid that it could someday short again and cause a fire. An LED light source would eliminate the heat and the worry about a fire, but I'm concerned about any effect on the accuracy of the readings.

I used to worked in the optical industry several years ago and I enjoyed it. I took about a semester of courses towards becoming a licensed optician, so if I were to go back I would have roughly a year and a half left.
I am currently at a job making roughly 50-60k a year but I do not really enjoy my work. I am in a position to go back to school part time and finish my degree and work a day or two a week as an optician. Also, the field I am in may not be around for much longer. I do not despise my current job, but I remember selling glasses at an optical store while working toward my degree was way more fun and fulfilling than what I do now.
Also, what is the ceiling of how much I can expect to make after obtaining my state license and passing the ABO and NCLE? Will obtaining an ABOM make a difference as far as salary or career outlook? Can I teach with an ABOM or do I need a teaching degree?
As far as starting an optical store as a licensed optician, how much am I looking at to start a place up? In everyones opinion here, is owning a store worth the stress? Or is working for someone better overall? Do the financial ends justify the means as far as owning an optical business being a licensed optician in oppose to being an optometrist (or at all)?
Last and CERTAINLY not least, how happy is everyone with their situation working as a licensed optician? Do you licensed opticians out there enjoy your work?

First-Quarter 2016 Report: Revenue up a Robust 9.4% Excl. the Currency Effect
Acquisitions and Partnerships Since the beginning of the year, Essilor has stepped up its strategy of forging local partnerships, with nine new transactions representing combined revenue of around €100 million on a full-year basis. In South Africa, a majority stake has been acquired in One Vision Optical Pty Ltd., an eyewear, readers and sunglasses distributor with around €6 million in revenue, which also markets comprehensive vision solutions to independent opticians. It holds strong positions across sub-Saharan Africa.
In Canada, Essilor has acquired a majority stake in Axis Medical Canada Inc., an optical instruments distributor to eyecare professionals with revenue of around CAD 6 million. It will enable the Company to drive faster sales of instruments, particularly its refraction and optometry technologies. Essilor has entered the Peruvian market with the acquisition of Ocutec Laboratorio, a prescription laboratory with around €3 million in revenue. It will enable Essilor to expand its product and brand portfolio in a country where there are more than 30 million inhabitants and strong demand for better vision.
These acquisitions come on top of the five transactions already announced since the beginning of the year, i.e., Vision Direct in the United Kingdom, iCare Industries in the United States, OPV in Chile and two small laboratories in Brazil.
Lastly, on April 1, Essilor of America completed an investment in Opti-Port LLC, a U.S. alliance of leading, multi-office eyecare practices. This acquisition will continue to strengthen the independent eyecare profession in the United States by accelerating key programs designed to deliver a stronger patient experience.

Anybody have feedback on the Weco E3 edging system? I'm looking at starting a new finishing lab in the clinic so if anybody has comments on this edger or something similar that would be great. I have a prospective patient asserting his habitual polarized specs (Shamir progressives in a high wrap Wiley X) are 'laser resistant.' He's ex-military, and I figure they're of course looking hard at this sort of thing. However, though I could easily find non-Rx safety goggles and even 'military grade' specs, I'm unaware of anything of the sort being commercially available for prescription lenses. Lasers are an increasing threat to soldiers. Battlefield lasers can cause flash blindness, corneal hemorrhaging, retinal lesions and burns, and possibly permanent blindness.
"Laser light is coherent, collimated and of a single wavelength, so that your eye focuses it to a very fine spot," Kimball said. "In this way laser light is more intense than regular white light."
Handheld versions of lasers are readily available to anyone, anywhere. Military system-based lasers are also becoming more prevalent on the battlefield. Laser hazards can come from systems such as target designators and laser-range finders.
Current laser protective lens technologies use dyes and/or optical films to absorb or reflect laser energy. Natick researchers are aiming to increase the survivability and mobility of warfighters in situations where lasers pose a threat and/or hazard. They are working to provide protection in low light conditions, especially protection that will work better at night. Their goal is to make laser protection part of a single, multifunctional lens system.
After some very cursory digging, I turned up ANSI Z136.1, which covers 'Safe Use of Lasers' and delineates "classes" of laser emission according to wavelengths and associated risks of exposure. Absent some other parameters bridging that and our own ANSI Z80.1, the term "laser resistant" in spectacle retail seems like nothing but a big can of worms that I can't yet tell anyone has really combed through.
My first guess is that my patient either got his existing lenses through service channels, or more likely is simply confused about what he has. However, before I take my weak guesses back to him, I'd be grateful if someone better illuminated can show me light....

The Zanniness Zone---Billing Medical Insurance -VS- Vision Plan

Scenario:
Patients come in for a medical exam, due to the symptoms described and or diagnosis on file. Our receptionist informs them of any copayments and deductibles at check in. They go back have a medical exam with our MD. Before leaving they decide to get specs- most people are clueless about their plans so I search and find that they have a vision plan- tell them it will be billed for glasses but not the exam because we performed a medical exam based on Symptoms and or diagnosis determined by our MD. They order specs with a smile. Our checkout girl again informs them who/what for we are billing, Collects the exam deductible and/or copayment as well as the amount due for the glasses. Patient leaves happy.
Everything is Honky-dory.
For awhile.
But then... Bam!
Somewhere along the way they learn that the vision plan exam copayment is less than the medical insurance and they want us to rebill- negate the original and demand a refund. (Which we don't.
We are sometimes called 'stupid' and other things that I won't repeat; which is doubly insulting because we offer top notch customer service, are extremely helpful and friendly to everyone that comes in. You could say we're so kind is almost sickening...
Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem? I am wondering if it's unique to an ophthalmology practice since we see a lot (50-100 pts a day) of patients that have medical issues and also have optical.

Hi, my grandpa was having amblyopic some years ago and he had treatment for that, but nowadays it seems like he lost his vision. He often falls down and can't do anything by himself. If the first surgery was fine he couldn't have lost his vision, right? He is 75 now and we are planning to contact a specialist and to have an another surgery. Making custom clip-ons
Dutch optician here, I've been looking into making custom metal-rimmed sun clip-ons for my customers but information resources are almost not available (not surprising, considering it's a niche). A local company who did it before went dark after a possible bankruptcy.
Since these products were quite popular within a certain customer group I wanted to see if it could be created in-house.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be very much appreciated. Hand bending stock rims doesn't sound like the way it's done commercially, even for custom work.

I do not carry MJ, however I have made several sets of lenses for a customer's own MJ. He now wants to purchase a complete pair, the same as his current pair. I thought perhaps I could get the sunglasses and do the lenses for him. However I am not having much luck finding them. The frame is a 3 piece, MJ 907-2. I find similar looking suns, but they are not 3 piece, they appear to have a rim behind the lenses at the top.

+2.75/-0.50/080
+2.50/-0.25/090 add of +2.00
Comfort Short- 15 seg.
New RX
+3.50/-0.50/105
+3.25/-0.25/060 add of +2.00 Hi-Index 1.67
Rd 1: Varilux S fit Orig had a seg on this new pair at a 22.3... Some one remeasured her and did a 17. Yeah I know... Some explanation later on that.
Rd: 2 Remade with 17 seg. Still had some complaints.
Rd: 3 Tried a Definity 3 as its supposed to shine with hyperopes. Now her complaint is the only clear vision is in the midrange. Both DX and RX is a lil blurry.
She has been rechecked and the RX is bang on. Even went with the non compensated lens to rule that out. Tried panto and face adjustments. putting on old pair
of varilux comfort and old rx, she can see the peripheral way better.
I need help with rd 4. the only other thing i found is this...
The Lab should have taken the size down, as there is a 2mm. gap in the eye wire. IMO there is a LOT of distortion as they cranked on it. Never saw the color like that.
