Question about back surfaced SV blank progressives

jeudi 31 décembre 2015

We have been having a discussion with some of our older Opticians (40+years in Optics) and lately they are angry about the amount of distortion/abberation that the new backside digitally surfaced SV blank lenses have at the fitting cross. If they move the lens "slightly" side to side the myers jump or become blurry. They said that if the lens is made from a SV blank, that anything at and above the fitting cross from one side of the lens to the other (horizontally/periph) the myers should be clear.
The only way I could think to explain why they are not 100% clear SV blank or not, is that the progressive design had to be put on the lens and there is still a corridor where the rx has to be manipulated to make that corridor clear for POW. Is that correct? They had pulled out a comfort2 lens to show how much "clearer" the myers were when moved. Yet when I look through and compare both the comfort and the digitally surfaced lens, the meyers on the comfot get distored at the very edges of the verification circle ( ) and on the digital lens its right outside of the circle, which tells me that the digital lens has just barely wider areas at the top.
Any other ideas how to explain that the digital lenses are a step up and not just all marketing hype? So far the public feed back has been fantastic. But the older Opticians feel like they are over charging for a horrible lens design.
Question about back surfaced SV blank progressives

Why do Shamir PALs lower the distance minus so much sometimes AKA NEW YEARS BALL

Hi guys, I use the Auto III and Auto II all the time, or at least more than occasionally. I take great measurements.

Can anyone explain to me why the minus in this RX was dropped so substantially? What is Shamir thinking here? Patient is complaining of blurry distance.

OD -2.00
OS -2.50

Add 2.00

BVD:15 PNT 7 Wrap 9.5

Compensated RX is
OD -1.89
OS -2.38
ADD 193

What do those measurements have to do with a .12 shift in diopters?

Granted the patient was seeing with their old glasses
OD -2.25
OS -2.75

OD 20/20
OS 20/20 -1

So I'm not sure WHY the prescribing OD decided to drop the distance minus, just to make my life hell. They also prescribed a "Computer RX" of -.25 and -.75, luckily I recalculated THAT one before ordering it.

If anyone has any reason why shamir would drop the minus bay an 1/8 of a diopter when the lens is sitting FURTHER from the eye than in the exam room what is the deal?

K THX BYE and happy new year!

Never Ever Purchase A Hilton Grand Vacation Club Time Share!!!

A message to all fellow optiboarders, especially those in the U.S.:

If you are ever considering purchasing a Hilton Grand Vacation Club time share, DO NOT DO IT!

So many vulnerable people are being offered a free 3 night visit to Orlando in one of their properties. Naturally, you must attend one of their seminars while you are there. I repeat DO NOT DO IT!

They will tell you anything you want to hear, but believe me, they are liars. Once you are a timeshare owner, they have you bent over a barrel and is impossible to get out. This sort of activity should be illegal and is a total bait and switch once you sign.

Take my advice...never ever get roped into this - it is a total scam full of thousands of trapped victims that can't get out.

I want to thank all of you who contribute and share your knowledge and experience with others on here! I have learned a tremendous amount and have realized that I don't know near as much as I think that I do! I am continually humbled by the the smarts of some of our members!

More importantly, I have gained some incredible friendships on here! Some of you guys and girls have become very trusted and loved friends! It is the friendships that have kept me coming back. Their has been a camaraderie and atmosphere of fun that I have enjoyed and rejoiced in thoroughly over many years.

Unfortunately........the fun here has died for me. There are a few members that have ruined the fun that I once enjoyed here. I no longer want to contribute, share and participate. Most of the friends that I have gained here know how to contact me outside of this forum. I need to refocus my attention, fun, antics, and career goals on more productive outlets.

I have sent Steve a PM to thank him for putting his trust in me and making me a moderator. I have asked him to relieve me of those duties.

I look forward to engaging and continuing the friendships that I have gained here on other venues!

I wish all of you (except one) a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Stay Thirsty My Friends!

I want to end 2015 and my participation on Optiboard with this article.

http://ift.tt/1UchFP6

This article was highlighted on Facebook by a fellow member that I respect highly.

I am sure that some of the regular contributors and Old Boy's Club will poo-poo what is said in the article. That is okay.........we can judge their contributions for what they are.

I think that it is a very important read and one that needs to be said. It rips open the reality of what we face in the marketplace today.

I am a Realist and can see the writing on the wall. But, I want to hear others opinions on the matter. I want to hear how you will deal with the ever changing business climate.

I want to open up a discussion on this from those of us that are in the trenches. I don't want to hear from the few members who do not actively dispense and haven't for years. I know that they will have a lot to say, can't help themselves, and will post regardless, and continue to spam this site trying to optimize their websites.

Well..............what do you think?

Optician Magician...

Still waiting on the lenses for a patient to come in.
RX -13.00 -3.00 094
-8.00 -2.50 059
He insisted on a metal Nike frame, having always worn zyl. I did what any optician would do, advise against, warning patient about center and edge thickness. you know, the "pop bottle" look. Patient insisted. So I ordered him a 1.74 Spectrum lens with EX3 anti glare and transition add on. He paid 903.00.
...Or his father did, rather.
In the lab notes I ask for a roll and polish. It had to be a 50/50 bevel because with that RX he would not have been able to close the temples otherwise.

He has called and called and called in excitement, he is 4 hours away driving distance and all I can think of is how much he has probably romanticized this pair. I have been an optician 5 years and I have never been this nervous about a pair of glasses. Mostly because of how many broken glasses cases I have seen as a result of bullying.
Should I have lied and told him it couldn't be done? He would have just gone elsewhere to someone who would may not have cared.
I did my best, any suggestions going further?

Signed,
an Optician who cares.(Maybe even too much)

The Oculus Easyfield is an exciting compact perimeter that performs static perimetry up to 30°. It has been designed as a visual field screener and perimeter, offering features usually available only in large units.

The Easyfield’s integrated bowl with a 11.81” (30 cm) radius and distance corrected lens is adapted to the Goldmann standard and fulfills the ISO-norm 12866 for perimeters.

The Easyfield has a fixed point grid with 135 test locations including 30-2.

Portable automated perimetry devices play an important role in glaucoma screening; by design they function reliably even outside of traditional eye clinics, reaching out, therefore, to an increased number of patients. Moreover, they can be successfully used in regions with poor medical coverage or in mobile screening stations. Our objective was to combine fast threshold examination strategies with advanced software for interpreting visual field data based on expert systems, while fully maintaining the portability of the device.

To achieve our goal, CLIP (Continuous Light Increment Perimetry) strategy and GSP (Glaucoma Staging and Progression) software were for the first time implemented on the hand control unit of the Oculus Easyfield perimeter. This setup not only enables shortened threshold examinations during glaucoma screenings, but also offers a novel possibility to interpret the visual field data. With no further need of a dedicated computer system, this setup provides us a portable device with extended glaucoma screening abilities.

This equipment is in working order- automatically takes readings, has a clear camera, is calibrated, and in excellent cosmetic condition.

3 month warranty included.

Unit includes control unit for easy testing without having to use a additional computer.

The illuminated control panel on the CR-2 allows medical staff to easily navigate operations in dark rooms.
Lower Cost of Ownership - Contributing to a lower total cost of ownership, the CR-2 can help reduce energy costs in medical facilities with its energy-efficient design.
Compact and Lightweight - The small design of the CR-2 provides the smallest footprint of any Canon retinal camera to date.
Low Flash Photography - The low flash intensity of the CR-2 minimizes miosis, shortening the time required for taking multiple exams. The reduced brightness helps improve patient comfort and reduces the "ghost" image that comes with after-exposure.

Ergonomic Control Panel - The simplified design of the control panel ensures easy operation by a trained examiner. A single joystick positions the camera for the desired point of view. In dark rooms, the operation panel illuminates for easy navigation, and the 35 mm working distance between the patient and the operator allows easy access to the patient's eyes should they need assistance with opening their eyes.

Features

  • Compact and Lightweight
The small design of the CR-2 provides the smallest footprint of any Canon retinal camera to date and is portable when needed. Canon instrument tables (sold separately) may comfortably fit a CR-2 and a Canon Auto-Tonometer (sold separately). Keeping the Canon machines next to one another helps expedite the exam process.
  • Mobile Retinal Imaging Solution
The mobile retinal imaging solution is like having onsite Teleretinal Screenings in a box! Designed exclusively for the CR-2 Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, the custom, hardshell travel case is equipped with top and side carry handles and wheels making the CR-2 Retinal Camera easy to carry to and from locations where stationary retinal imaging equipment is unavailable. The custom travel case accommodates (each sold separately) the CR-2 Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera with dedicated camera for CR-2, laptop (max. dimensions (HxWxD) 1.47 x 16.4 x 10.7 inches), external fixation lamp, mouse, power cord and USB cable.
  • Canon EOS Camera Technology
High quality diagnostic images are obtained using a dedicated EOS camera for retinal imaging which incorporates a large, high-definition CMOS sensor.
  • High Resolution Images
The CR-2 provides high resolution images, making it easier for the diagnosis and detection of a wide range of ocular conditions and diseases.
  • Digital Filter Processing
Red-Free and Cobalt digital filters are included and provide enhanced screening exams. Red-Free is used for evaluating the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and vascular structure of the retina associated with documenting Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy or Hypertension. The Cobalt filter is also used for evaluating the RNFL, as well as, Optic Disc and Optic Disc Drusen. Additionally, Green (Vascular view) and Red channel (Choroid view) digital filter views are also included.
  • White LED Flash
Using white LED flash light as a light source saves on power consumption and energy costs.
  • Low Flash Photography
The low flash intensity of the CR-2 minimizes miosis, thus shortening the time required for taking multiple view exams or stereo images. The reduced brightness improves patient comfort and reduces the "ghost" image the patient sees after an exposure.
  • Automatic Exposure Function
The observation light automatically optimizes the light brightness and flash intensity.
  • Ergonomic Control Panel
The simplified design of the control panel can be easily handled by a trained examiner. A one-hand joystick positions the camera for a desirable point of view. In darkly lit rooms, the operation panel illuminates for easier navigation. The 35 mm working distance between the patient and the operator allows easy access to the patient's eyes should they need assistance with opening their eyes.
  • Retinal Imaging Control Software
Using the Canon Retinal Imaging Control Software (RICS), images can be stored, viewed, processed and sent to a printer. The Canon RICS complies with the DICOM®* Standard. Images may be stored as DICOM or JPEG files and sent to a printer. For more information, visit Retinal Imaging Control Software.
*DICOM is a registered trademark of the National Electrical Manufacturer Association for its standard publications relating to digital communications of medical information.

the lonely and busy optician.

I was curios what you think a good Dr to optician ratio would be. On a given day I will have 2-3 ODs and at least 1-2 MDs and sometimes 3. I feel like I can barely keep up with orders let alone do frame returns, check in glasses, call patient, clean, and most importantly spend time with patients asking and answering questions. If I actually have a slower day I find myself frenetically trying to get things done. I am the only optician in my office. last year it wasn't as bad but we have hired more doctors. They hired more techs as well but they have forgotten the lowly optician. Does one optician seem right? I feel I could do so much more if I had help at least two or three days a week. How many opticians work in your office? How many would you think would be ideal when you doctors can see 90+ patients a day?

Chinese Manufacturer differences

Yes, we are an original frames manufacturer in Wenzhou, China where Chinese main eyewear industry located. I can tell that nearly the frames that you bought whether in US, Europe or other counties are almost made in China(Shenzhen, Wenzhou, Danyang), because we also worked with some big companies in US that you discussed about on OptiBoard with an large order. So, what's the difference from these 3 places. Let me breakdown this way
- Price
Shenzhen>Wenzhou>Danyang
Wenzhou price were as low as twice than Shenzhen, of course the quality will be a slighly different. Also using the same machine like CNC... and other auto devices

Interested in re-entering the field

Hello, I'm new to the forums and would love for any helpful advice. I have been out of the eye care field for many years now. I have an AAS in Ophthalmic Dispensing. I do have a New York state license that is inactive. I also have experience in the lab too.

I'd like to find somewhere that offers an apprentice or training type program to help me get back up to date in the field. I still have alot of the knowledge needed from my years in the field, but I thing a training program would help me to get back up to speed on things since I know many things have probably changed over the years. After I feel comfortable of course I will take the steps to reactivate my license.

I would be thankful for any advice or help that anyone could give me. I am currently in Florida but looking to move back to upstate NY when the opportunity presents itself.

Thanks!!

How Strange is this?

Here's one for the record books. I'm siting at a dinner table with my visiting sister and niece and my niece started to ask me about wearing contact lenses. She was saying that she didnt think she would ever be able to put them in her eye. So one of my daughters says oh it's very easy to do. So I said how do you know? She says oh, I wear contacts now. Oh really I responded, where did you get contacts? Oh mommy took me to an eye doctor in Alabama. My daughters live a mile from me.

[Los Angeles/CA] Cartier and Tag Heuer display towers

dimanche 20 décembre 2015

We are closing down the store in Koreatown, LA.
Most of the custom piece displays and showcase towers have been sold.

We still have 5 Cartier and one large Tag Heuer display / showcase towers.
I forgot to take a picture with the lights on,
but with the lights turned on, they look very luxurious.

Great way to set up is to put 4 Cartier towers side by side in a square alignment
and they will look beautiful with all of their lights are on.

All for $800 in cash when pick-up
Not sold separately

Leave me an e-mail address if you are interested.
Thank you!

Pink AR coating

jeudi 17 décembre 2015

Was wondering if anyone knows a coating lab that does Pink, both surfaces. I've seen something called retinal bliss which I think is blue hue on the front and pink on the back. I want that pink on both sides. Having trouble getting them made. Am interested in very low reflections. Thanks.
