So far Hydrophobicity is only used on AR coated lenses, but not on plain regular lenses of all or any type.
A hydrophobic top coating (or the many other names as oliophobic, ect.) on AR coated lenses fills the gaps, or valleys between the under a microscope, mountainous looking surface, creates a smooth and slick surface that is easy to clean.
Most optical retail professionals do not know that this is a familiar product in more industrial areas than just the optical. It is used from hospital operating rooms to building walls to make them waterproof.
There is an excellent description on these coatings in the Paint&Coatings Magazine published 9 years ago.
